KODT: 20 Years of Covers (PDF)

This 364 page PDF chronicles a journey that began a little over twenty years ago in a place that now seems far, far away — the bedroom of a small apartment doubling as a home office. Someone once said that unexpected journeys are the sweetest of all, and I suppose that’s true. For I had few expectations that the poorly drawn characters I committed to paper on that homemade desk (cobbled together from a chalk board perched atop stacked milk crates) would lead anywhere, let alone drag me with them.

After spending four years gaining popularity in the back of the monthly gaming magazine SHADIS, I yielded to the growing pressure from the fans, and Knights of the Dinner Table was spun off into its own comic book in July of 1994. Initially, the comics were supposed to be a “now and then” thing but by issue four, having a mind of its own, the comic turned into a monthly. Long story short, it’s been going strong ever since, becoming one of the longest running comic books featuring the same artist/writer(s). Who would’ve thunk…?

As of this writing over two hundred and twenty-five issues of Knights of the Dinner Table have been released along with a dozen special issues and over fifty trade paperbacks.  Not a brag, mind you, for although KODT began as one man’s effort, over the years, it’s turned into anything but.

Over the past two decades, I have had the honor of meeting and working with hundreds of individuals. From my wife, Barbara (who has been there through it all), to my partners, Dave Kenzer, Steve Johansson and Brian Jelke to a veritable army of talented freelance writers and artists who have provided back-up content (as well as strip-ideas) the journey has not been a solitary one.

What excites me about this book is that it celebrates some of the great unsung heroes of the journey — the artists whose work has graced the covers of Knights of the Dinner table. Month after month, year after year it has been their work that has been the first thing to greet readers each month, be it on the newsstand at their FLGS or in the mailbox.

Although I have done a handful of covers myself over the years, I have always enjoyed how the various KODT cover artists have portrayed the characters and interpreted them.

This book is dedicated to them all. In its pages, you will find every cover gracing issues 1 through 200 of Knights of the Dinner table. We wanted this book to be more than a simple gallery of the cover art, however. We wanted it to also serve as a useful reference work. Toward that end you will find detailed strip synopses of every strip appearing in these issues (which was no small task to generate, many thanks to my wife, Barbara Blackburn for working on this tedious task for many months).
