Everknights #06 (PDF)

Flingin' Feces with the Art Monkey

Hey everybody, thereís a lot to be said in this little poop session, and I know I havenít been keeping up with my rants, so letís just get to it. First of all, I want to introduce, and give a big thanks to Diego Jourdan, who did an amazing job filling in on this issue. I wanted everyone to know that the choice to go with a substitute artist for this issue was not one I made lightly. Ever since the monthly run of Negative EverKnights issues last year, Iíve been slowly falling behind. Iíve never been one to rush my artwork for the sake of getting it done, and I thought that just getting in some extra hours would fill in the gap. Well, as it often does, life interfered. Plans changed, and slowly I became swamped by the day-to-day, even though EverKnights was still hitting the shelves on the month it was supposed to. When Issue #5 barely came out on time, I swallowed my pride, and went looking for someone I felt would be able to capture the "legendary goofiness" that is EverKnights. What made it even kewler, was that this issue had a martial arts flair built in, so once I saw the samples, the choice was simple. Diegoís work just jumped out at me and made me laugh, even without the text, yet at the same time it looked so kewl. I hope you all enjoy the issue as much as I did.

Now, the big thing I have to announce is that this will be my final Flinging Feces, and as it turns out, EverKnights #5 will be my last issue. As I stated above, life has itís own personal way of changing on you when you least expect it. I never thought Iíd be walking away from a comic I helped create, and love so much, but opportunity knocks very rarely (not only "once" as Eminem would have you believe) and you have to take the chance. For the record, even when looking for a fill-in artist, I had no idea that I might not be back for issue #7. Tony and I were working together on the script for #7, and I even had some thumbnails ready to go, when I got the call that has turned my world upside down. This isnít some horrible tragedy, far from it. It might be the best thing to happen to me since I hooked up with Kenzer & Company, way back when we were self-publishing Avelon. Itís no secret that comic books arenít selling as well as they used to, and Iíve been working double time as a freelancer to pay some extra bills. Well, one thing led to another, phone calls and interviews occurred, and I am now the newest animator for Midway Games (makers of Mortal Kombat and NFL Blitz)!

Working in comics has always been my passion, and being able to connect directly with fans like you all has been an amazing experience, but working on Video Games has always been my dream. Like every gamer in existence, I too have always had ideas to improve upon, or just plain create the best game ever, and now Iím moving one step closer. I wanted to take this opportunity to thank all you fans out there, the vocal ones, and the silent ones that approve by continuing to read the book, for your support. I couldnít have gotten as far as I have without you all and your words of encouragement. Iíll never be too far away from comics and conventions, and in fact I plan on starting up a web comic in July called Friendly Fire, so keep on checking for details and updates. Itís not the same as a comicbook, but itís all I can manage right now, and I still have a lot of jokes and silly pictures left in me.

I also want to thank Tony D. for helping me get through some tough spots, and always being there with the next script or a word of encouragement. Iím counting on you to keep the ship running in tip-top shape, Tony.

Finally, I want to sincerely thank KenzerCo. for getting me to where I am today. Without their guidance and support, Iíd probably be some wealthy pretentious bastard at an advertising agency pimping the tobacco companies to Latin American countries. I wish them all the success in the world, and hope whomever they choose to replace me on EverKnights gives them less of a hard time than me ;)
So long and thanks for all the fish,

Manny Vega
